Cabaret

April 14 - June 14, 2015

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome! A brilliant and daring musical set in the strange playground of 1931 Berlin, where the seedy Kit Kat Club reveals a tale of love in the ruins, of hope and ultimately of loss. Cabaret features unforgettable characters and musical numbers that are both cheeky and chilling. A theatrical experience not to be missed, Cabaret won eight Tony Awards for its original production, four more for a subsequent revival and was adapted into a major motion picture which won eight Academy Awards. Life is a Cabaret, old chums – come to the Cabaret!

Book by Joe Masteroff
Based on the play by John van Druten
Stories by Christopher Isherwood
Music by John Kander
Lyrics by Fred Ebb
Co-directed & Choreographed by Rob Marshall

Van Wilmott

Artistic/Musical Director

Willkommen, Bienvenue and Welcome to the Mayfield Dinner Theatre and our production of Cabaret. As with every production here, we strive to provide an evening of great entertainment. Perhaps with Cabaretyou will be in store for a bit more. It is a brilliantly constructed book, full of laughs, silly bits, naughty bits, but also be prepared for an emotional journey. The underbelly of one of mankind’s darkest times is featured in Cabaret. It had huge Tony-winning success on Broadway in 1966 and again in 1987, was revived on Broadway in 1998, and is playing there again in present day. This show famously holds no punches in its depiction of pre World War II Germany, and is infamous because of it. We have the great pleasure of bringing back Mayfield Directing favourite Ron Ulrich to lead this production. Ron was the Artistic Director at the Mayfield (in the last century, as I remind him) and when he left to go to Neptune Theatre in Halifax, Cabaret was his first production there. I had the pleasure to go out and do that show with him and it has always been in my mind to bring this amazing show to the Mayfield stage. Here we are,15 years later along, with the three leads from that production, Pamela Gordon, Christian Goutsis and Nicola Lipman, leading an uber talented cast to tell this amazing story. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you (and don’t be afraid to give her back when you are finished with her)….Cabaret.”

I am currently Artistic Director of Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton Ontario. Through the course of my career, I’ve been Artistic Director of Neptune Theater in Halifax, Executive Director of the Mayfield Dinner Theater, Artistic Director of Stage West, Artistic Director of Huron Country Playhouse, and Artistic Director of the Muskoka Festival. Among the favourite shows I’ve directed here at this theatre are Jesus Christ Superstar, Guys and Dolls, Tuesdays with Morrie starring Jamie Farr, Driving Miss Daisy with Michael Learned, The Foreigner with Gary Sandy, Double Act with George Segal, The Rocky Horror Show, The Last Night of Ballyhoo with Joyce DeWitt…oh, heck, the list goes on and on. But one of the great joys is still coming back here to the Mayfield. This is a terrific theater that does terrific work and I love being a part of it.

Derek Stremel

Bass/Banjo

Derek grew up in a musical family and learned piano from his mother. He also learned fiddle, mandolin and guitar from his father. He studied bass and banjo on his own and started gigging in venues as a bassist with his father when he was 14 years old. He moved to Alberta when he was 18, leaving his Manitoba farming roots behind, and began a musical career playing mostly the electric bass. He wanted to learn ‘what those smart guys knew’ so he enrolled in the GMCC Jazz program in 1990 and learned to read the ‘little black dots’. For more than a decade now he has been employed at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre playing musical revues and Broadway musicals. He also has a home studio where he teaches, writes, records and produces and plays as many of the instruments as he can on the recordings. I know, I know…yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah – boring but true! He loves and respects the music of Cabaret and is grateful and honoured to play this show and work with a bunch of old and new friends. He dedicates this show and it’s funds to his girls Pam, Emily and Ashley. Derek is always delighted by the opportunity to write about himself in the third person.

Bob Tildesley

Trumpet

Excerpt from Mark Miller’s “The Miller Companion to Jazz in Canada”: “Born in Calgary, Bob Tildesley played in R & B bands there before moving to Edmonton at age 20 where he quickly emerged as the city’s leading jazz trumpeter – and indeed one of Canada’s finest – through his work in the late 1970’s with pianists Tommy Banks and Bill Emes and saxophonist P.J. Perry, all associations that would continue into the 1990’s. An expressive soloist, particularly skilled with mutes, Tildesley showed himself to be as adept playing bebop with Perry on the LP Sessions and the CD Quintet as handling blues and swing on two CD’s recorded in Edmonton by the legendary Kansas City pianist Jay McShann, Hootie’s Jumpin’ Blues and Still Jumpin’ the Blues.” He has played several shows for the Mayfield Dinner Theatre including War Brides, Wizard of Oz, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Chicago. Bob is thrilled to be part of the orchestra for Cabaret.
