A Message From the Artistic Director

Van Wilmott

Welcome to another exciting season at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre! Thank you for taking time to see what’s in store for our 2019/2020 season.

In the early 1950’s, a disc jockey by the name of Allan Freed coined the phrase “Rock n’ Roll”. He had no way of knowing what he had just started and what it was to become. The biggest evolution in the history of popular music was about to take place, and it continues today. Our season is dedicated to the story rock ‘n roll and all things that shake, rattle and roll.

There is no better show to open this season than with the Broadway smash Million Dollar Quartet. A simple but historical photograph taken one night has become iconic and been given new light with this great show. We are thrilled to open our season with it. Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee was the epicenter of rock n’ roll and this story of one night in December 1956 with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins is the perfect beginning to our year-long tribute.

Our theme continues in our holiday season revue with Class of ‘63 – A Rockin’ Reunion. As America turned the corner into the new decade, recording artists, excitingly diverse in their styles and backgrounds, came onto the scene bringing a new sound to these odd creatures called teenagers. Celebrating the best music of the day, join our Class of 63’ reliving the great moments and music of their youth.

To change things up, we ring in the New Year with what is perhaps the craziest, and most acclaimed farce of them all. Noises Off broke all the rules of comedy when it was first introduced in London’s West End in 1982. It’s a backstage, birds eye view of what goes on and what goes wrong when you mount a show, and we are thrilled to bring this chaos to the Mayfield stage!

In the spring you’re in for a party with a brilliant and larger than life parody of the 80’s rock ’n roll scene, the Broadway smash hit Rock of Ages. This baby is loud and proud! Tacky and brilliant, featuring classic rock tunes from the 80’s, it will rock our stage harder than it’s ever been rocked before!

And speaking of classics, our season ends with the most popular juke box musical in history and that is why we are doing it again! Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story has been our most requested show during its 8 year absence from our stage and is the perfect cap to this rock n’ roll season. This amazing artist created an indelible repertoire of music in his tragically short life and was a pioneer and influence to all that followed in his wake. We are currently working with the producers in the UK on a summer-sized, re-imagined version of Buddy and can’t wait to share it with our audience. It’s the perfect way to cap off what we hope you find to be a great rock ‘n roll season!

RAVE ON!
