Welcome to the Mayfield Dinner Theatre and to Back to the 80’s: A Most Excellent Musical Adventure. If you are new to the theatre, we hope you have an amazing time and if you’ve been with us before, we are thrilled to have you back! As the name suggests, we will indeed find ourselves blasting back 30 odd years to revisit this weird and wacky decade. This is a show that we’ve wanted to do for many years now and finally have thrown caution to the wind, and are diving into an entire evening of the 80’s. It was an amazing decade of pop culture with more than it’s fair share of fashion faux pas! The music of the 80’s is some of the greatest and weirdest ever recorded and it’s been a blast trying to recreate it for you. There was so much great material to work with and we have assembled an awesome gaggle of talent to bring this show to life. The “X-mas show”, as we call it, is always a great time at the Mayfield and in turn provides a challenge for us to make it as popular as the year before. This year’s assault on the 80’s should guarantee to put a smile on your face and keep your toes tapping. Enjoy!

Derek grew up in a musical family and learned piano from his mother and fiddle, mandolin and guitar from his father. He studied bass and banjo on his own and started gigging in venues as a bassist with his father before he had a driver’s license. He moved to Alberta after high school leaving his Manitoba farming roots behind and began a musical career primarily playing the electric bass. He wanted to learn ‘what those smart guys knew’ so he enrolled in the GMCC Jazz program in 1990 and learned to read the ‘little black dots’. For more than a decade and a half now he has been employed at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre playing musical revues and Broadway musicals. He also has a home studio where he teaches, writes, records and produces and plays many of the instruments on the recording; yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah…boring but true, riiiiiight? He’s gonna love regurgitating the music of the 80’s and is grateful to play this show and work with a bunch of friends, old and new. He dedicates this show and it’s funds to his girls Pam, Emily and Ashley. Derek is always delighted by the opportunity to write about himself in the third person!
So, after 10 weeks of playing guitar and frying eggs for Roy Orbison time moves on – and yet somehow back – to the 80‘s. Last season at the Mayfield, Harley played for both Folkswaggin’ – Music of The People and Top Of The Pops – A British Rock Invasion. He was also the live sound engineer for Cabaret and continues to work as Head of Audio for the theatre. Past Mayfield highlights as guitarist/performer include Four Lads Who Shook The World – The Beatles Story Parts 1 and 2 (as George Harrison), The Super Groovy 70’s, and Jesus Christ Superstar back in the 90’s. He has toured extensively with artists of many different genres, including stops at events such as Lilith Fair and major jazz festivals. Outside of the theatre he plays and sings with his own group in support of his debut jazz/blues CD, entitled “Don’t Talk”. He also holds a diploma with honors from the Computer Systems Technology program at NAIT.
