Welcome to the Mayfield Dinner Theatre and to what we are sure you will find to be a great evening of entertainment. This is the beginning of our 2014/2015 season, and to start it off we are very proud to bring back to our theatre A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline. Although it’s been 50 years since Patsy left us, she is still widely accepted as the greatest country singer of all time. She was an amazing woman, singing amazing songs, with an equally amazing voice. We were fortunate to assemble the same cast that presented the show to you back in the 2004/2005 season; Sara-Jeanne Hosie delivers an unbelievably warm and powerful performance as Patsy, and Sheldon Bergstrom reprises his role as Little Big Man, the narrator of the story. The last three weeks of this production will bring back a Mayfield theatre favorite, Devra Straker, playing the role of Patsy and we are equally thrilled to have her join the show . The musicians take center stage in this production and they are first rate! It is also an exciting time around here as we anticipate the transformation of our hotel property to the DoubleTree by Hilton in early 2014 so be sure to watch for updates. We at the Mayfield are dedicated to making your evening of live theatre a memorable experience and welcome and feedback on your experience. Thank you for your patronage and for supporting live theatre.

Derek grew up in a musical family and learned piano from his mother. He also learned fiddle, mandolin and guitar from his father. He studied bass and five-string banjo on his own and started gigging as a bassist in venues with his father when he was fourteen years old. He moved to Alberta when he was eighteen, leaving his Manitoba farming roots behind, and began a musical career playing mostly the electric bass. He wanted to learn ‘what those smart guys knew’ so he enrolled in the GMCC Jazz program in 1989 and learned how to read ‘the little black dots’. For more than a decade he has been employed at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre playing musical revues and Broadway Musicals. He also has a home studio where he teaches, writes, records, produces, and plays all his instruments on recordings sent to him via the Internet. I know, I know…boring but true. He loves and respects the music of Patsy Cline and is grateful and honoured to play this show. Derek is always delighted by the opportunity to write about himself in the third person.
The two previous Mayfield season openers found Harley playing the role of George Harrison in Four Lads Who Shook The World: The Beatles Story parts 1 & 2. This season he’s very happy to be back on stage with the ‘doggies’ playing for Patsy once again. Other Mayfield highlights as a guitarist/performer include Dark Star: The Life & Times of Roy Orbison, Super Groovy 70’s parts 1 & 2, and Jesus Christ Superstar back in the 90’s. He has toured extensively with artists of many different genres, including stops at Lilith Fair and major jazz festivals. Outside of the theatre he plays and sings with his own group in support of his debut jazz/blues CD, entitled ‘Don’t Talk’. He also holds a diploma with honours from the Computer Systems Technology program at NAIT.
